If you're in Europe, making a Brooklyn cocktail is easy. If you're in America, not so much. One of the ingredients, Amer Picon isn't imported into the United States, though there are a number of good substitutes now on the market. This is a good rye whiskey cocktail, but the elusiveness of an ingredient may have gotten ahead of the drink.

1.5oz rye whiskey (Rittenhouse bottled in bond)

.5oz dry vermouth (Dolin)

.5oz Amer Picon

1 dash maraschino (Luxardo)

Add all ingredients to a mixing glass.

Add ice and stir.

Strain into a chilled cocktail glass and express some orange oil over the top of the drink.

This is one of my favorites.  I’ve been using Golden Moon’s version of Picon, which is very good.  Jamie Boudreau also has published a recipe for an Amer Picon taste-alike.  One of these days I’ll get to try the original, and then I can comment on which is better and/or more like the original!
