Ace of Clubs Cocktail

Some of the greatest cocktails ever created use only three ingredients: Manahttan, Martini, Daiquiri, Margarita, to name a few. Charlotte was asked to create a new cocktail for a Manhattan restaurant that needed to be simple yet sophisticated. She came up with a Scotch based drink using only three ingredients, the Ace of Clubs cocktail.

Instructions

Stir ingredients with ice using your Monkey Shoulder iSpoon.

Strain into a Old Fashioned glass over a large ice cube.

Looks delicious — if possible, can you post the details for making the ginger syrup (presuming it’s not a packaged item)?

Nick, ginger liqueur is going to put you at a higher proof than a syrup, so I’m guessing you’ll want to look for a product like Canton, King’s Ginger, or one from a smaller artisan distillery.

Charlotte, could you talk a little about why you chose the Jerry Thomas over other aromatic bitters? There’s a big clove focus in that one, I noticed, but am not making the mental jump between that flavor and the drink (which alas, having no Monkey Shoulder in the house, I haven’t gotten to make yet). Thanks!

It’s the little things, I tell you. I saw the mini-carafe, and my mind read “syrup” (even though Charlotte - and the recipe - clearly says liqueur).

A natural mental leap! Seems to be a tricky balancing act when you want to keep that focus on the ingredient’s role rather than a particular brand.
